The Serpent's Lie

Genesis 3

One day a serpent spoke to Eve. "Did God say you can't eat fruit from any of the trees in the garden?"

"No," explained Eve. "God said we could eat from all of the trees, except for the one in the middle. If we touch that tree , we will die."

"Surely you won't die," hissed the sly serpent. "It's just that God knows if you eat that sweet fruit, you will become as smart as He is."

Eve looked longingly at the ripe fruit. It seemed almost ready to drop into her hand. And it did look delicious. Then she plucked a piece from the tree and ate it.

Eve shared some of the fruit with Adam, and he took a bite. Suddenly they both grew embarrassed, realizing they had no clothes on. So they covered themselves with leaves and hid in the bushes. God called out, "Adam, where are you?" Adam told God what they had done, and God was very sad.

God cursed the serpent for tricking Eve. Then He told Adam and Eve to leave the beautiful garden. And from that day on, Adam would work very hard to provide food for his family, and Eve would suffer great pain when giving birth to their babies. And in the end, they both would die.

The First Promise of a Savior

God had told Adam and Eve that they would die if they ate the forbidden fruit. Their sin separated them from God, the source of all life. Without God, a person is "dead" in a spiritual way.

Although Adam and Eve disobeyed God, he still cared for the, He promised that a Savior would come and destroy Satan's power over them (a head wound). The Savior himself would also be wounded ("on the heel").

God kept his promise by sending His Son Jesus ( John 3:16). By dying for our sins, Jesus destroyed Satan's power.
