Solomon

1 Kings 3

After a good, long life, King David died. David's son, Solomon, became Israel's king.

One night, God appeared to King Solomon in a dream. "Ask for whatever you want," said God, "and I will give it to you." "You did so much for my father," said Solomon. "And his kingdom was great, but now that I am king, I feel like a little child. I don't even know how to rule. So please make my heart wise so that I can do what is right for Your people." God was glad that Solomon didn't ask for riches or long life. God granted King Solomon's wish, and Solomon became the wisest man ever. God also gave Solomon a long life and great riches.

Just as God had promised David, Solomon built God's temple. Many, many builders worked for seven years to complete this beautiful building. Skilled craftsman decorated it with carved wood and fine gold.

When it was finished, Solomon held a huge celebration to dedicate the temple. For fourteen days the people worshiped God at the temple! Although the temple was wonderful, Solomon knew that it was not great enough to contain the Almighty God. But God promised Solomon that His eyes and His heart would always be on the temple, and with His people.

A Right Beginning

Solomon had big shoes to fill. His father, David, had been a loyal servant of God. Now, Solomon was faced with taking his father's place. When the LORD appeared to Solomon, offering him anything he wanted, Solomon showe great character. He asked for the wisdom. God praised Solomon for this request and gave him much more than he asked for.

If you are called to do something new, here is a model for your first act: Ask God for the widom to carry out what he is calling you to do. There is a promise connected to asing for the gift of wisdom - the gift will be give (see James 1:5-8). God will provide us with what we need, as long as we put him first in our lives.
