Jesus and His disciples went to a wedding celebration in Cana.
Jesus'
mother, Mary, was also there. "Jesus," whispered Mary, "there's a
problem here. They have run out of wine to serve the wedding
guests."
"Why are you telling Me this?" asked Jesus.
Mary just smiled and called the servants over. "Now, do whatever
Jesus says," she instructed them.
Jesus then pointed to six large water jugs. "Fill
those with
water," He said to the worried servants.
The servants filled the jugs with water, then stood before Jesus
expectantly. "Now," said Jesus, pointing to a jug, "dip some out
and present it to the master of this banquet." The servants did
just as Jesus said.
The master tasted it and smiled. He took the bridegroom aside and
said, "Usually they serve the finest wine at the beginning of the
wedding celebration. But you, you have saved the very best for
last!"
Jesus' disciples were amazed by this miracle! Who was this man who
cared enough about a wedding party to change ordinary water into
wine? And they all decided to put their faith in Him.
Jesus Went to Parties
Jesus enjoyed happy gatherings of people. This may surprise us when we think bout the serious work Jesus came to do. He didn't preach at the wedding reception, but he did add to its joy by supplying more wine.
John tells us that changing water to wine was Jesus' firt miracle. He announced his kingdom at a wedding feast. Sometimes we think that sad times are the only times people think about God. Jesus knew that happy times are also good times to think about him. Let's rejoice with Jesus.
